Who they are

xAI is a frontier lab based in the United States, documented at x.ai. Current models are API-served; older Grok weights have been released under Apache-2.0.

How they are funded

Subsidiary of a listed parent. No longer independent. Merged with X Corp in 2025, then acquired by SpaceX in an all-stock deal announced February 2026 that valued xAI at $250bn; SpaceX itself listed on Nasdaq (SPCX) in June 2026, so xAI is now a division of a public company. The Gulf sovereign capital from its earlier rounds did not go away — in an all-stock deal it converted into equity of the listed parent, which is why those funders are still listed below.

Capital crosses borders. xAI operates from the United States, but principal funding also comes from Saudi Arabia, Qatar. For sovereignty or export-control assessments, the funder jurisdiction can matter as much as the operating one.

Unverified. Ownership and funding are compiled from public reporting as of 2026-08. Unlike the hashes and signatures in this registry, Sovereign Frontier cannot attest any of it, and private-company funding changes faster than this page does. Treat it as a starting point for your own due diligence, not as evidence.
